Precision trenchless engineering: HDD success in Lille

19 Mar 2026 | Electricity

Supporting RTE in its network-upgrade programme requires not only equipment but also precision engineering.

Beneath a five-way road junction in Lille, a 3-metre‑diameter wastewater pipe dominated the underground space. It was impossible to move and impossible to bypass from the surface.

Trenchless works were the only viable way forward, and OPTIMUM’s challenge was clear:

  • Avoid the massive water pipe
  • Navigate around the multitude of other existing networks
  • Limit disruption in the busy urban area

But the solution was less straightforward.

Drilling dual 100-meter HDDs might seem standard, but calculating the optimal geometry – entry and exit points, angles, drilling depth, curvature radii – required meticulous G2 PRO engineering.

And when an unmapped brick structure was discovered while excavating the entry pit, the drilling depth had to be increased on the spot.

The ability to make these real-time adjustments is precisely where engineering experience and onsite expertise make all the difference – and ultimately define project success.

HDD construction is now complete, thanks to great teamwork and expert knowledge.
